Michigan Brew Tour

Beginning around June of 2001, Cheryl and Todd started visiting  microbreweries and brewpubs in Michigan. After falling in love with hand crafted brews, we came across the Michigan Beer Guide and realized - there's a LOT of them in Michigan, around 70. (Click here for some pics)

Starting in Midland, MI, we began making trips to other parts of the state, marking maps with our objective breweries. Not only did we want to visit every microbrewery/brewpub in Michigan, we also "had to have" a souvenir growler. Nothing better than bringing some brew home.  Click here for growler picture page.

This site will describe our various trips throughout the state with our personal rankings of the different styles of beers - likes and dislikes. We've also tried to sample interesting food from each location we've visited. We try to find something unusual that catches our eye, it could be an appetizer, soup, sandwich or dinner.  After all, good brew needs good food to go with it.

Special thanks to the Michigan Brewer's Guild (www.michiganbrewersguild.org), for this wonderful goblet!  They currently have a reward program.  Prove that you've been to 10 Michigan breweries by sending in photos of yourself at the breweries and they'll send you one of these special, limited edition Michigan Brewers Guild beer goblet. (click for picture).  Check out their website for events and to become a member.  You should check the pamphlet to be sure they are still doing this.

Our Personal Preferences (click here) may vary from yours.  Just because we don't like something, doesn't mean you will!

We would appreciate any comments or updates on openings and closings of microbreweries/brewpubs in Michigan.  Send an email to: Todd  or Cheryl (click name)

January 21, 2007 - FINALLY, got all our cavern pictures posted (click here).  Next, is the beer tasting from last summer in Bay City.  Wow, are we way behind!

January 12, 2007 - Added more links to the upper left.  We appreciate the links from other sites and our monthly visitors.  Now that the holidays are over we have some more plans and will get them going.  Look for new links from Black Lotus and Big Rock Chop House for starters.  Still haven't posted our visit to Maumee Bay in Toledo, OH, but here are some pics for now.  Maumee Bay Pics, click here.  And for the spelunkers (if you like caves) check out the Mammoth Cave National Park - and other -  pictures (click here).

August 6, 2006 - Added a couple more links on the left where people have posted links to our website from theirs.  Will get our Toledo brewery visit posted soon.

July 10, 2006 - Busy spring planting and taking vacations, finally getting our Detroit visit posted.  We'll soon have more updates from our visit to a brewery in Toledo, spelunking in Kentucky, and the Bay City Beer Bash.

March 14, 2006 - Finally got the Royal Oak area visit posted (click here).   ALSO, we worked hard on organization - if you go to the List of Michigan Breweries (click here), we posted links to our visits to each of the listed breweries (which is pretty much all of them).

March 11, 2006 - Cheryl was looking at website this morning and found we did not have ratings or try food at Royal Oak.  This was a big blonde moment since we have been there twice before.  So off we go to Royal Oak and we will take Lily's and Bastone's growlers with us for a re-fill.  All 3 breweries are within 3 blocks of each other.

March 2, 2006 - Cheryl updated several pages by adding picture pages of interesting stops we've visited along the way on our brewery tours.  The links are at the top left of this page OR click here to see the "Breweries, inside & out" which has several inside and outside pictures of our recent visits to breweries.  Or check out "Things to do" which contains the sunken boat tour, lighthouses, waterfalls, Belle Isle, and other photo albums.

February 25, 2006 - Decided to take a road trip to Detroit.  Visited Fort Street & Atwater and took the elevator ride to the 72nd floor of the Renaissance Center.  Check out the details and pics here!  We're up to 66 different Michigan growlers now!

February 24, 2006 - Stopped into Lumber Barons' for a couple growlers. Art Dore asked us to post this upcoming event - the Bay City Beer Bash. (click here)!  We'll be there for sure!  Sample Michigan brews!

February 13, 2006 - We made another visit to C.J.'s  (actually a month ago) and finally got to sample their food - excellent! Click here to see.  Also, stopped in Lumber Barons and they have a new Doppelbock on tap - very good, you must try it!

February 4, 2006 - Headed to Mt. Pleasant for another visit to Mountain Town Station since it's so close.  We also wanted to try some more items from their menu and see if they had any new brews to sample..  Check it out here!

February 3, 2006 - Visited Lumber Baron's a couple more times to fill some growlers - how convenient.  $5 a growler (64 oz) on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  Also, added a map to our U.P. trip to show the long  journey we took - 1300 miles!  Click here to see!

January 27, 2006 - Lumber Baron's now has growlers!   We now have 64!   Plus updated our growler group photo (click for bigger picture, or click here)..

January 22, 2006 - Visited CJs again and tried their food.  Also, revisited Bonfire and Redwood Lodge (will have a review posted soon).  We've also been linked from some other beer sites and have posted their links on the upper left of this page.

January 13, 2006 - Added a link above to a list of all the Michigan microbreweries - includes addresses, phone numbers, and web addresses when available.  Click here to see!

January 7, 2006 - We were heading to Livonia for a friends birthday and decided to stop at CJ's.  They now have growlers!  We purchased two - one for our friend and of course one for us.  We now have 63 growlers!  We also took more pictures - click here to go to the CJ link to check out the pics.  Or click here to go directly to the picture page.

December 31, 2005 - Made a visit to Quay Street Brewing Co. and Belle River (our friend Fred) to make some reviews.  Click above to see!

December 28, 2005 - Todd was passing through Bay City and decided to stop at Lumber Barons' (click here) to check on the porter.  Just came out TODAY!  Yes, picked up a growler and we shared it later.  Definitely my favorite!  5 Stars!  They will be starting "growler night" soon.  It will be Tuesday evenings and you can get your growler filled for $5.  The growler shipment should be here in the next couple of weeks.

December 11, 2005 - Visited the new Lumber Barons' grand opening in Bay City.  (click here to check it out).

December 4, 2005 - Visited the Traverse City Area since we didn't have notes for North Peak & Mackinaw, nor did we get to visit Traverse Brewing Co last time.  Also, visited Shorts again to get some more pics and try more beers. We now have 62 growlers and Todd did get 2 more pint glasses and 1 more shot glass. (Click here for links - Traverse, North Peak and Mackinaw, Shorts)

November 3, 2005 - Went to the Cork 'N' Ale 11th annual fall beer tasting.  Click here to check it out!

October 22, 2005 - Re-visited Kuhnhenn (they now have growlers, Bastone (they now have good beer), and Lily's (not on the website from loss of notes and we never ate there).  Click here and see our ratings!   Up to 61 growlers now! (click picture or here for bigger pic)

Plus, we went to Bonfire (went there years ago but didn't take notes), and Etouffee (brand spanking new)!  Click here and see!

October 9, 2005 - Had to re-visit Redwood because we lost our beer rating notes from 2004.  Click here to check it out.

October 1, 2005 - went to 2 new ones - the Livery and Saugatuck (and a couple of revisits).  Also, knocked 3 more off the list in the Grand Rapids area - Middle Villa, Schmohz, and The Hideout - check out the links!.  We now have 59 growlers and 27 pint glasses.

September 24, 2005, visited MBC again along with Jolly Pumpkin and Redwood Lodge again.  Check it out!

September 10, 2005, newest update resulted from a trip to the Upper Peninsula - see the links to the right labeled 2nd U.P. trip, parts 1 and part 2 - or click these links.  We're up to 54 growlers, 28 pint glasses -click for pic (6 of these are of one set from Thunder bay - not all shown in pic), and still 6 shot glasses.  We also took new trips to Mountain Town Station and Sanford Lake Bar and Grill.

April 8, 2005 here is the latest update on what we've collected so far.  50 growlers, 22 pint glasses -click for pic (still including the 6 glass set from Thunder Bay) and 6 shot glasses (not many breweries have the shot glasses).  We got 3 more growlers on the November, 04 trip to Old Boys, New Holland,  and Via Maria.

October 10, 2004 we have 47 growlers.  Darn, we only got 7 on our last trip.  We did have a change in plan - check out the links for Old Hat and Arcadia.  The November tour will take care of that when we visit New Holland and Grand Rapids Brewing will be a re-visit.

Sept. 11, 2004, we now have collected 40 growlers.  On our next trip we hope to get 9 more when we visit the Kalamazoo area.  When we first started this adventure the ultimate goal was to get growlers.  We didn’t stop at the microbreweries that didn’t have them.  Since then we have decided to tour all of them regardless of growler availability.

In the beginning we didn’t take very good notes and we have since lost a lot of them.  It is easy to do when you have them on napkins and such.  Starting in 2003 we decided to make more effort into rating using the 1-5 stars for appearance, beer, food, and atmosphere.  We now write down every brew tasted and make note of special ones we don’t.

When available, we also try to collect match books, coasters, shotglasses, and pint glasses.
