Black Forest Brau Keller 10/1/04

This was our 2nd visit here. We miss-placed our notes from the previous time and decided that we needed to re-evaluate.  Since Frankenmuth is close by it made it easy to come here again.  We knew the food and brew were good, plus we hadn’t been to a brewery in two weeks.

The best spot for getting information on the brewery is to sit up to the bar.  It was crowded in the bar area and we were lucky to find two seats together at the end.  First thing is to get a list of brews, so we picked the ones we wanted to sample.  In our sampler we tried:  Amber Waves of Grain Lager (which is also Oktoberfest), Sully’s Irish Stout, Busch Road Brown Ale, Muth Porter, and Russian Imperial Stout.  The Porter was the favorite and we ended up with a growler re-fill.  We also liked both Stouts, the Brown Ale seemed watered down (too light), and the others we rated as average.

Rather than get dinners this time we ordered an appetizer, the Brewery Sampler Platter.  It had Willi’s sausage, homemade cheese sticks ( HUGE), firey wings and beer soaked shrimp, everything was great.  We just could not believe how large the cheese sticks were they looked like building blocks.  These are a must to try, we have never seen anything like it - awesome.

For Friday’s entertainment, they had a guy playing acoustic guitar and singing classics – not too bad.  He took an early break because of a wedding rehearsal dinner going on.  We left before he played again so we could stop at Frankenmuth Brewery before heading home.

Frankenmuth Brewery

We parked ourselves across the street rather than pay valet.  At the bar, Bryan was very funny and helpful.  He set us up with a sampler of what we wanted to try as we looked over the menu.  The band, Grasshoppah, was setting up as we ordered the grilled portabella sandwich.  Both the sandwich and the band were great.  We even loved the complimentary big bread pretzels with mustard butter.

The beers in our sampler were:  Octoberfest, Old Detroit Amber Ale, Geyer’s Cream Ale, Frankenmuth Dark, Pioneer Pale Ale, and the Frankenmuth Dry Stout.  We got a growler of the dry stout (our favorite), and we also liked the dark.  The rest were average.

Other items of interest on the menu were the Portabella Ravioli, and the Smoked Salmon Pate.  The bar staff, Bryan and Nicole, gave excellent customer service.  The band, food, service, and beer were all great.  It was getting late and time to head homeward.  We put our new growler refill in the cooler with the Black Forest growler so they would be iced for an evening at home.
