We’ve been looking forward to getting back to Detroit and finish the area.  Detroit Beer Co. is located downtown across from the Opera House.  They have been here for 2 ½ years.  It will be 3 in Sept. ’06.   Todd P. and his wife Laura went with us since they live nearby in Livonia.  As we have in the past, we’ll list their ratings below too.  The inside reminded Cheryl of Royal Oak only smaller.  (Click here to see pics)

Eric waited on us and was quite helpful.  He knows a lot about the brews and was knowledgeable about the history.  They have a nice menu.  The Brewhouse Hummus, Asiago Cheese Dip, Beer Cheese Soup, and Brick oven pizza caught our eye.  Todd P. had the Beer Cheese Soup, he said is was very good and gave it 4.5 stars.  The Detroit Red is used in the soup. Eric recommended the Fish and Chips or the Munster Chicken (made with the Beer Cheese Soup).

On tap you will find either 5 or 6 beers.  We ordered up our samplers and tried:  Broadway Light (very light like an ultra, 100% barley is used), Detroit Red (caramel sweet malt flavor), Local 1529 IPA (aggressive hops, medium body, light amber color), Dwarf Zwickl (german brew, brewer received receipe while in germany), Dunkel Weizenboch (hazlenut and sweet, tastes like wine) and Dry Stout (good chocolate with a hint of dryness).

We were very happy to hear they had growlers and had ours filled with the Dry Stout.  This one makes a total of 67 different growlers.  Todd P. and Laura filled their growler with Detroit Red.

Motor City Brewing Works

Click for more pictures!

The last times we were in this area,  we’ve been too early as they open at 4:00 pm.  So happy to finally get here when they are open.  Motor City has been open for 13 years - starting with the tap room and then later making wine.  The horseshoe bar is a great look for the tap room.  There is some outdoor seating upstairs for the warmer weather.  (Click here to see the pics)

We ordered up samplers and tried:  Pale Ale (mild), Lager, Ghettoblaster (amber color yet light with a hint of hops), Strong Ale (10% barley wine), Porter (very good, smooth in flavor), and Nut Brown (nice nutty aftertaste).  All the brews here are not real hoppy, just the way we love our beer.  Todd P. tried the Elderberry wine and he said it was good.

Dan waited on us and was fun to talk to.  John who is the owner was also in for a while.  They didn’t have growlers, but we were glad to hear they will have them in a couple of weeks, we’ll be back for sure to get one.  They were also out of  bottled beer.

Todd P. wanted to rate the music they were playing a 10, great tunes.  Ghettoblaster the beer you can hear.  Compilation recordings of some of Detroit’s finest bands, Motor City Brewing has volumes one and two available for purchase.

Traffic Jam & Snug Restaurant & Brewpub

Time for another visit here as Todd P. and Laura hadn’t been here, plus, it’s directly across the street from Motor City.  We needed to get some pics of the inside, we have some from the bar area and the upstairs we were setting at, but don’t have them posted yet.  Too many people in the restaurant to get more.

We ordered up samplers and tried:  Grand Theft Pilsner, Steam Beer (California common beer, taste like Anchor Steam), 40th Anniversary Pale Ale ( had a bitter aftertaste), and Oatmeal Stout (we were expecting a roasted malt flavor, but the bitterness was more than we like).

They don’t have growlers, but, they will fill a Mason Jar - they were out and we didn’t have one.  We’ll have to remember to bring a Maon jar next time we come here.
