Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. (Oct. 21, 2005)

We recently found out that Kuhnhenn now had growlers, so another trip here was in order.  This would allow us to rate the brews on tap and take some with us.  Last time we were here they did not have food, but they now have a few sandwiches and pizza, along with the cheese, crackers, and nuts they had before.  They also have gourmet coffee drinks, which we didn’t notice last time.  They still make wine and you can also brew your own here.

Sitting at the bar we ordered up a sampler to try eveything on tap, they had 10 today.  We tasted:  Tangerine Wit (Belgian white ale with a blend of tangerine, chamomile and coriander), Czech Pilsner (cold lager aged over 2 months), Brothers Gold (a pristine gold ale), Loonie Kuhnie (a pale ale that is amber is color), Classic American (a light beer), Oktoberfest Lager (amber-red lager), All Hallows Ale (pumpkin ale), American I.P.A. (very hoppy), Simcoe Silly (10% made with simcoe hops, belgian yeast and candy sugar, and aromas of banana, bubble gum, orange and spices), and Oatmeal Stout.

We really liked the Oatmeal Stout the best and got a growler of that.  The bartenderess was apprehensive about filling the growler with the stout as she said it would go flat.  We convinced her to do it anyway, as we’d be drinking within a few hours.  It did not go very flat and was still very tasty when we drank it later.

Todd was glad to have picked up a pint glass.

Bastone (Oct. 21, 2005)

Our last visit here was shortly after they had opened and the beer was not good.  Since then, we learned that Kim Schnieder had gone over to help them out.  We knew it was time to make a re-visit and we really wanted to try some of the food.  We definitely had a much better experience this time.

Susan waited on us, and we found that Kim had left but the brewer was doing very well on his own now.  We sat at the bar again (always good to be close to the brew) and ordered up a sampler.  We tasted:  Blonde, Wit (hints of coriander and orange peel), Belgian Pale, Dubbel, Pumpkin Ale (the seasonal), and Bastone Porter (with raisin added).  They usually have a Pilsner, but were out of that at this time.

To eat we ordered the Seafood Waterzooi, which is a Belgian seafood stew with lobster, clams, cod, mussels, and salmon.  This was great!  Other items that sounded interesting to us were the Lobster Club Sandwich, Fried Calamari, and the Salmon Cesear salad (we saw someone else order this and it is huge).  On Sunday’s Kids eat free – 2 kids per one adult.

We really liked the Porter, it was so good, we ordered it for our growler re-fill.  This one we could not wait to get to our friends house so we could drink it.  One more stop to go before we could do that.

Note:  once we did open the growler to drink the great Porter, we were very disappointed to find it had been filled with the Pumpkin Ale instead.  After a phone call the next day, they were more than happy to give us a free re-fill next time we came.

Lily’s Seafood & Brewery (Oct. 21, 2005)

This will be our last stop for the day and again our second visit here.  Lily’s has not been put on our web page, we were here about 3 years ago and lost any notes we did take.  We also had to try the food this time.  There is a small patio area out front and the restaurant is a nice size.  We sat at a table near the bar.  They have many fish tanks with very interesting fish in them.  Kids eat free here on Tuesday.

Heather waited on us and was very helpful.  In our sampler we tasted:  Lily’s Light Pilsner, Whitefish Bay Wheat, Reggie’s French River Red, Black Lager, Bourbon Ale (aged in bourbon barrels 2 months), and Oktoberfest.  We really liked the Black Lager and had our growler re-filled with that.

For dinner we ordered The Ultimate From Land and Sea (Maine lobster, shrimp, scallops, and beef tenderloin.  This was very good and we loved it.  Although we split it, it sure was filling.

Now we were ready to head to our friends house and drink the growlers.
