Old Boys' Brew House 11/12/04

For Cheryl’s birthday we decided to take a trip to the west side of the state to go to Spring Lake and Holland.  This would also give us a chance to re-do Grand Rapids.

Our first stop was Old Boys’ Brew House, a very cool place.  The owner is a major dog lover and everything is set up around dogs, including dog pictures on the walls.  Old Boy was the name of the owners dog and attributes its canine-oriented theme to the influence and memory of a Chocolate Lab, “Brutus, the Snake Malone”, AKA Old Boy.  The menu is a large dog tag (a foam type) this was very unique.  They also had bowls at the bar and at the tables with trivia cards in them.  All of the bar stools have names on the back of them.

We sat at the bar and since it was early enough in the day we were able to talk to the bartendrress as there wasn’t very many people.  We ordered up a sampler and tasted:

Connor’s Kolsch, Waterdog Wheat, Dortmunder, Rover’s Waggin Red, Old Boys Brown Ale, Ollis Oatmeal Stout, The Underdog (lo carb), Raspberry Gold, Raspberry Wheat, and Golden Sour.  The 2 Raspberry’s are made from a raspberry concentrate, the gold is mixed with Kolsch and the wheat is mixed with the wheat.  The Golden Sour is like a corona, it is a lime concentrate with Kolsch and then topped with more Kolsch.  We got a growler of the Old Boys Brown Ale.

We looked over the menu and decided to try the Kain’s Krab Dip – garlic, crab, baby shrimp and artichoke dip served in a wheat bread bowl with vegetable chips.  This was very good.

This brewpub is pretty nice and a large place.  A non-smoking business.  The specialty food is Pizza.  They have many other items such as sandwiches and homemade soups.  A lot of good looking food.  They have a section that has couches for seating and a video game room.  They also have an upstairs area.  A second bar accommodates the game room area.

They were busy at the time so we didn’t get much of chance to really talk brews with the bartender.   In our sampler we tasted:  Sundog Amber Ale, Full Circle Single Malt, Nitro Stout, Bitter Brown, Dies Irea, and Phi.  The one we liked the most was the Bitter Brown and that’s what we got a growler of.

When we first walked in we thought, on no another Big Rock Chop place.  People were dressed nicely.  The bar was very small, but the bartender said it’s not the size that counts.  The restaurant area was very large and they also have a bakery. This place was nothing like Big Rock Chop because they didn’t have the stuffy atmosphere here.

For happy hour they had $2.00 pints and some nice hors devours, stuffed crabby things, meatballs, and wings.  We tried them and all were great.  In our sampler we tasted:  D’Oro, D’Ambra, Tentazione, George’s Pale Ale, Zosimov the Elder, and Venus’ Vice Beer (banana flavor).

We liked the Zosimov, which was the Russian imperial stout, but was too strong @12% and tasted like vodka.  We liked the D’Ambra second so we got a growler of this.  We could not believe that they had a plain growler with no printing on it, so you know we gave them a hard time about that.  Just like Stoney Creek we’ll fix that.

Cheryl went and checked out the bakery and wanted to get something but all of them looked so good and decided she didn’t need any desert.  They have pizza, dinner for two, and different entrees.

This is our second visit here and we did not eat here the first time, so we were excited to try out some food and rate the brews.

This place is real nice with a nice big bar, which we sat at.  They were on the busy side due to the dinner hour but we were still able to talk with the bartendress and the head brewer John Svoboda.

In our sampler we tasted:  Centennial Silver Foam, Pale Ale Tap, River City Red, Lumber Dark, and Best Brown.  After introducing ourselves to John he brought us some Oktoberfest, Cask Ale, and Extreme Pale Ale to try.  We liked the Lumber Dark the best and got a growler of that. Cheryl really wanted to try the Coffee & Cream Porter but the only way was to buy the gift pack. We decided that we would not purchase that. John spent a lot of time with us showing us the brewery system and talking about brews and what can make or break a good brew.  John has a lot of knowledge and we were lucky to have had the time with him.  Thanks John.

To eat we ordered the Bourbon Steak, it came with haystack onion rings, potato pancakes, and veggies.  We also had a choice of soup or salad and chose the New England Clam Chowder.  The clam chowder was the best we have ever had anywhere.  The steak and the rest of the meal were very good.
