Quay Street Brewery   April 2003

This is 20 minutes away from our friend Fred so we decided to make a weekend of it.  Quay Street is very near the water in Port Huron, a real nice place.  This time we didn’t sit at the bar we sat at a table.  To eat we ordered Hummus, which Todd and I have not had before it was really good.  Can’t remember what else we ate.

We ordered up a sampler to taste some brews.  They didn’t have a big variety, and darn they were out of porter (something dark).  To tell the truth we can’t remember what varieties they had.  Cheryl remembers they were out of porter.  We did get a growler of something – no notes to back it up, but we have the growler.

Our next stop was Dragonmead.  Fred had been here before so he gave us some info on the drive over.  No smoking and no food although you can order pizza and have it delivered there (or bring in your own food of any sort).  They do have pretzels.  It is a small place, but the atmosphere is medieval - real cool.  There are all kinds of board games and brain-teasers to do, including dart boards.  If you smoke you must go outside.  We sat at a table again since the bar area was quite small.

We ordered a sampler and tasted:  English Style Fred’s Oatmeal Stout, Honey Porter, Woody’s Perfect Porter, Imperial Stout, Dubbel Dragon Ale, Brown Noser, and Inquistion Pale Ale.  The Honey Porter was the favorite, real smooth.  The rest were real good.  They have a very large selection of brews to choose from so we stuck with the ones we usually like – the darks, reds, and browns.

Something real nice you get with a sampler is a paper that is entitled sampler tray, one side is selections and the other side for comments.  This came in very handy for us and as luck would have it we still had ours.  According to our notes, we rated the porters and brown 5, the stouts 4, and the Dubbel Dragon and IPA 3.

Here we are at our last stop.  We sat at a table again.  This is a nice place with the basic bar atmosphere.

We did not order food but looked over the menu and they had some interesting items like, calamari, garlic shrimp on garlic toast and perch dinners.  Todd and I really like Calamari and portabella mushrooms and like to try these at most places, but, dinner at Freds later would be better.

We ordered a sampler and tasted:  Shark Tooth Bay Golden Ale, King’s Peak Caribou Wheat, Snake Eye Canyon Red Ale, and Boston Blackstone Porter.  We are sure we did not like the Wheat as this type never appeals to us.  They don’t have a large selection here and our friend Fred did not care for these brews much.  We did get a growler, of course, not sure which one, … but, we got it (probably a red or porter).

Fred is a fan of their food, but, we honestly don’t remember much about this place.  We need to make another visit and check it out again – take the camera too (having the digital cameras has been great for our trips).  That’s why we do the do-overs – now we can re-fill the growler and check it out again.
