Sports Brewpub, 8-7-04

After leaving Ann Arbor we headed towards Detroit and our first stop was Sports Brewpub.  It was just too early, not being open we walked across the street to a store called Candy Bouquet, Inc. and bought a couple of Disney princess mugs for the girls.

Once inside, the décor was 50’s and sports themed.  They also had a wall of sketches of old comedy, Marx Bro’s, 3 Stooges, Lucy, Desi, Laurel and Hardy, etc.  We sat down at the bar and ordered a sampler and asked for a menu.  The bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable.  We always tell them we are on a Michigan brew tour.  We had been to about 40 by now.  So the bartender went and brought out the master brewer, very nice and smart man.  We had excellent conversation with them both.  The plan we have is to finish all the brewpubs before end of the year and then attending the Annual Beer Festival in July.  They told us of the new brewpub Fort St. opening soon.

In the sampler we received – Bobby’s Blonde Ale, Kolsch, Brickyard Red, Second St. IPA, and Toughguy Stout.  The very favorite was the Toughguy Stout and we got a growler of that.  The rest were pretty good.

Traffic Jam & Snug Ice Cream Parlor

We actually drove by this once trying to find Motor City Brewing Co.  Once we had parked  and got out of the van we saw Motor City Brewing right there in the parking lot.  They were closed until 4:00 pm, heck it was noon!  So we went to Traffic Jam & Snug.  This is a very cool place along with a lot of history.  They make cheese, ice cream, etc. the only restaurant in Michigan to have a dairy license.

The restaurant was large so we asked for the bar.  We only tried 3 of their beers, they had no growlers. We tried – Slam Dunkel, California Strong, and Festivus Lager.  The Slam Dunkel was great and the other two we didn’t really care for.

We didn’t order any food, but they had a couple of interesting items, Italian style portabella mushroom soup and sweet potato fries.

Stoney Creek B.C. was (Atwater)

We then made our way to Stoney Creek.  The building was the typical large warehouse style.  They do bottle their brews, so it is a very large building.

The service was on the poor side, there was only about 12 people in the place and it took forever for someone to finally talk to us.  The grill in the back corner was just a smokin away and that area was all smokey.  Finally we were able to try the brews.

In the sampler we tried: Atwater Hell, Atwater Pilsner, Atwater Dunkel, Stoney Creek Red, Double Chocolate Porter, and the Rivertown Porter.  The favorite was the Rivertown Porter, next we really liked the Double Chocolate.  We also liked the Atwater Dunkel and the rest were average.

They had growlers, but only plain brown, as they were out of the labeled ones and awaiting shipment.  We didn't care, we had to have some of the Rivertown Porter.  Being as clever as we are though, we took the picture of the building and printed it out on photo paper and pasted it to the growler, probably looks better than their printed ones.         See picture above.

Looked over the menu and saw nothing special there.  We still had two more breweries to go so we didn't order any food.

Kuhnhenn Brewing, Co.

We hit the road to stop at Detroit Brewing and found them to be closed for business.  Last stop on our list was Kuhnhenn so we drove straight there.  This place was pretty nice.  You can brew your own beer and they are also a small wine maker.  We saw some pretty big orders of wine going out while we were there.   We sat up at the bar as usual and tried some of the brews.  They have no growlers but they do bottle some.

We tried the Scotch Ale, Liberation, Big Irish Red, and Kuhnhenn Bock.  The only one we thought was pretty good was the Big Irish Red.  Cheryl saw on the brew list that they had a Blueberry Pancake Ale.  We had to try it, and believe it or not, the smell was wonderful just like a blueberry pancake and it was good.

We decided to get a bottle of Devil's Horn and a mixed 6 pack to try later in our hotel room. The Devil's Horn was that great compared to our personal preferences (click here), too much raspberry, too tart, like a sweet tart stuck in your throat.  The bottle also exploded when we opened it like champagne.  The Brown Ale was okay, rated that a 3.  The Alt, Mild Ale, and Pale Ale we didn't care for.  The Pale Ale burned bad.  Opening these bottles was a scary experience, most of them had the explosion effect - maybe they had been around awhile.  Luckily we survived with no injuries.

The zeros below reflect the exploding bottles we got that didn't taste too well.  We liked the "on tap" beers we tried, just had a bad experience with the bottles.

They don't have food only snacks, ie: pretzels, popcorn and chips type stuff.

We did get a tour of the whole facility from the father of the brewer/owner  and it was very interesting and informative.  We really enjoyed that!  Thanks and we'll come back again to see what's brewing then.
