Upper Pennisula  August 2002

This vacation we planned for 4 months.  We printed off a list of all the lighthouses and waterfalls in the U.P. and guided ourselves with a Michigan County Atlas.  Wow, there are a lot of them, especially the waterfalls.  The UP has a lot of fun places to go but we could not see everything in the days we had so we chose the places that were on the way to each microbrewery.  We made sure to pack the cam recorder to capture some waterfalls along with the pictures we took.  We first stopped at Big Buck in Gaylord on the way for a growler re-fill.

We drove to Paradise first and that’s where we stayed overnight.  The first thing we did after checking in was to drive to Whitefish point and see the lighthouse – Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and Whitefish Point Light Station.  The museum was closed when we got there, too bad, it looked very interesting.  We did walk out by Lake Superior and read the sign.  This is the oldest lighthouse on Lake Superior and Whitefish Point had the most shipwrecks.

We then went back to our hotel room, which also had a whirlpool tub.  Time to crack open the Big Buck brew and enjoy the whirlpool

Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub

We woke in the morning, got ready and ate breakfast before driving over to Tahquamenon Falls.  Todd and Cheryl have both been to the falls before (a long time ago), it was fun to go together and take pictures.  We did see both the lower and upper falls but didn’t take a row boat across to the other side.  We have a long itinerary of stuff to do and a long way to travel.

Now it’s time to get to the brewery, we were hungry and thirsty.  What a cool place, it is small but has a very woodsy look.  They also had a nice outdoor area with lots of rocking chairs.

We sat up to the bar and ordered a sampler and some food.  As the old story goes we lost the notes so we don’t know what we ate or what we sampled.  Thank goodness they had growlers and Todd also bought a shot glass.

Lake Superior Brewing Co. in Grand Marais

On the drive from Tahquamenon we went past the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising.  We had thought about stopping and going on the Pictured Rocks boat tour, but we had some hiking to do in order to see more waterfalls and get to the next brewery.  Nothing is close by in the Upper Peninsula.

Lake Superior Brewing Co in Grand Marais is a small place with the outdoorsman décor.  We sat at the bar and looked over the food menu.  We ordered a sampler to taste.  Yeah, they have growlers and we think we got a brown ale to fill it with.

What a nice place and we ended up talking to another couple that was also visiting the microbreweries in the UP.  We took a picture of a private lighthouse and decided it was time to get going.

We drove about 1.5 miles to Sable Falls, which was a nice and short walk from the road.  There was a lot of other falls on the way, but it would take 10 days to see all the good ones.  We continued on to Munising, where we stopped at Munising Falls.  They are also called Rudolph Olson Memorial Falls, one of the most notable falls in the U.P.

The Vierling Restaurant and Brew Pub in Marquette

This would have been our next stop but they did not have growlers.  We usually don’t stop at a microbrewery if they don’t have them (at this time).  Our number one goal is collecting the growler.

Jasper Ridge Brewing

Next stop was Jasper Ridge Brewing in Ishpeming.  This is a nice place and easy to find.  We already knew they would have growlers so we ordered up a sampler to taste.  They were on the busy side so we didn’t get to talk much.

They had some good brew here and wish we had the notes to know what we tried. We now had 3 Growlers to start working on and thought it would be a good time to get some food and check into a hotel.

Our plan was to get up in the morning and hit some waterfalls along the way to Houghton.  So we headed out to Sturgeon and Canyon Falls - they are right by each other.  A very nice walk, Canyon was a short walk and Sturgeon was a medium walk.  Perfect way to start the morning.  Our next stop Houghton

Library Bar and Restaurant

Click for Bigger PicFinally, we arrived in Houghton and found the Library Bar and Restaurant.  We passed it the first time and took a turn to try and loop back.  However, we ended up on a big bridge crossing the gorge.  On the other side it was a steep hill – this place must be hard to handle in the winter!  After finding a place to turn around, we navigated back over the big bridge and to the rear section of The Library.

What a cool place.  The walls behind the bar are covered with old books in shelves that go to the ceiling.  They had books along the other walls and on shelves near the front door.  The dining area is plentiful and the bar nice and long.  All breweries should have a long bar – that’s where we want to be is near the beer.  No notes on the beers we tasted – next time we will though.

Eagle River Falls

We then drove farther north up the Keweenaw Peninsula.  There are several beautiful waterfalls along the way, most right near the road.  Stopping at Eagle River Falls, Jacobs Falls, and Silver River Falls on our way to the Brockway scenic drive. What a beautiful drive and well worth it.

We then drove into Copper Harbor and took a picture of the Copper Harbor lighthouse. Then we stopped at the Manganese Falls and took a long walk into the woods.  That was a lot of fun.  We needed to head back towards Marquette to spend the night.

Copper Harbor Lighthouse

We stayed in a motel on US 41/US 28, it was across the street from Lake Superior.  They had a nice restaurant and we had dinner there.  While eating we watched a huge ship with large masts and sails come into the Presque Isle Harbor through their large windows overlooking the bay a very nice view of Lake Superior.

We took US 41 all the back through the woods.  What a beautiful drive.  Now, however, we had a long hall back toward the Lower Peninsula. We still had time to stop at the beautiful beach along US 2 and a few other places along the way.  Finally, we reached the Mackinaw Bridge again and headed across – back to civilization.

There is a Hereford and Hops in Escanaba, but we did not stop here as it was out of the way and we had already visited the one in Bay City.

Update:  See U.P. Trip Part 2 for trip to Escanaba!
