Wiltse’s Brew Pub & Family Restaurant   November 2001

Oscoda is only about a 1 ½ hour drive from Midland, so we decided this would be an easy stop to make.  Wiltse’s is the first brewpub in northern Michigan.

We arrived just in time for lunch and looked over the menu.  We ordered a sampler minus the Weizenbier.  In the sampler we tried the Blue Ox Stout, Paul Bunyan Ale, and Oscoda Rare (which was an Oktoberfest).  The Blue Ox Stout was great so we got a growler of that.

To eat we had the seafood nachos.  Sitting at the bar having their lunch was the owner and master brewer, we got to meet them and it was nice to talk to them.  We weren’t taking many notes at this time so don’t have many details.  They also were happy to help us out with some ice for our cooler to keep our growler cold.

On our way home we decided to stop at our friend’s hunting cabin.  It was funny that they had a locked gate, but we got through and Stan was not there.  We waited awhile and he showed up and could not believe that we got through the gate.  Laughing we said we drove around it in Cheryl’s Jeep.  Actually we just had to lift the lock over the post and we were in.

Cheryl took a trip to Oscoda by herself in 2002 and got a growler re-fill.  She also ordered a bacon cheddar burger and fries.

Tawas Point State Park, Memorial Day 2004

Both of us came up here again Memorial weekend 2004.  We did not eat this time but we did try some brews and got that growler re-filled again.

While we were in Tawas we toured the Tawas Point Lighthouse.  The views were great from up there -  you could see Charity Island and Saginaw Bay.  You will find a lot of bird watchers here and we did see some different birds.  We also found several pieces of petrified wood along the shoreline and saw a lot of carp spawning in the shallows.  (click here to see pics)
